Robbins Basic Pathology explains the constitutional risk factors for Ischemic Heart Disease – 1) Age 2) Gender, and 3) Genetics. It also presents the major modifiable risk factors – 1) Hyperlipidemia, 2) Hypertension, 3) Cigarette Smoking, and 4) Diabetes Mellitus. I found an interesting study that shows a significant link between genetic variation, residential proximity to traffic exposure, and left ventricular mass (LVM). The link between LVM and residential proximity to major roadways, and their concomitant air pollution, is known, but the mechanisms for this link were not. The study, conducted in 2010, found that common polymorphisms in genes responsible for vascular function, inflammation, and oxidative stress mediate this link. Van Hee, V., et al. 2010.
