Soy-based health problems

RE: Kumar: Robbins Basic Pathology, 8th Edition used in Dr. Johnson’s class.

Chapter 8, which speaks in part about nutritional disease, got me to thinking about the widespread belief that soy is healthy for us and can actually reduce the risk of certain diseases, such as heart disease, several kinds of cancer, strokes, osteoporosis and asthma, as well as relieve symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes and bone loss. There has been a well organized campaign from soy interest groups such as Soyfoods Association and United Soybean Board to plant and utilize more and more acres of soy beans, promote it as a healthy food, and get more and more food products to use it. Extensive studies are now linking soy to breast cancer, brain damage, infant abnormalities, thyroid disorders, kidney stones, impaired fertility, and immune system impairment, to name just some.
